Given the focus on innovation at this year’s conference, it is fitting that Marel is a Gold Sponsor of the event.
As Stella Björg Kristinsdóttir, Marketing Manager at Marel Fish, explains, “We allocate an unrivaled percentage—5 to 6%—of our annual revenue to research and development, which enables us to be leaders in the innovation of fish processing technology that increases yield, throughput and quality. On the final day of the conference, Kristinsdóttir is chairing a session in which Sigurdur Ólason, Managing Director Marel Fish, will present a review of technological advances in seafood processing and how Marel innovation has influenced the development of hi-tech fish processing.
“Technological advances don’t just support the seafood processing itself, but also make our jobs easier at Marel. Virtual reality, for example, has been very useful at letting us create model machines that we can then test out and develop before actually manufacturing.”
Kristinsdóttir says that holding the conference in Iceland confirms the strong position of the Icelandic seafood industry on the world stage. The conference is generally held in places where the seafood industry is both progressive and important.
“So it’s an honor for Iceland to host this conference and Matis [Icelandic Food and Biotech R&D] has done a great job organizing the event,” says Kristinsdóttir.
“It’s also ideal to have the conference take place in the same week as IceFish [the Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition] where Marel also has a focus on cutting-edge innovation and technology. We’re inviting visitors to our stand at IceFish to walk through a computer rendered model of a modern fish processing facility in Iceland, so with both these events it’s an exciting week!”
The World Seafood Conference is being held at Harpa Conference Center, Reykjavik, from 10 to 13 September.
